How long will the caste census and the general census take to conclude in India?

India's upcoming Census 2025, which includes the first comprehensive caste enumeration since 1931, is expected to commence in early 2025 and conclude by March 2026. This timeline follows a significant delay from the originally scheduled 2021 census due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related logistical challenges.

Key Phases of the Census

  1. House Listing Phase: This initial phase involves collecting basic information about households, such as their location and amenities.
  2. Population Enumeration Phase: The main phase where detailed demographic data, including caste information, will be collected. This will be the first time since 1931 that comprehensive caste data is gathered, apart from the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), which have been counted since 1951.
The entire process is anticipated to take approximately 18 months, with final results expected by March 2026.

Delimitation and Future Census Cycles

Following the completion of Census 2025, a delimitation exercise will be undertaken to redraw electoral boundaries based on the updated population data. This process is projected to conclude by 2028 . Additionally, the traditional decennial census cycle may be adjusted, with the next census scheduled for 2035, altering the previous 10-year interval
